International Translation Day

As this month draws to a close, we’d like to take a moment to celebrate the professional translators, editors and interpreters on our team who deliver top-quality results day in, day out. Taking place every year on 30 September, International Translation Day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, after it adopted a resolution acknowledging the role of professional translation in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development

As facilitators of dialogue – be that between politicians, lawyers and their clients, medical staff and their patients, or authors and their readers – language professionals play an important part in bridging gaps in communication. This 30 September, we would like to pay tribute in this article to just a handful of the many wonderful First Edition linguists who are experts in their trade.

Nicole Gansterer

Our Austrian team member Nicole, who specialises in B2B communications, is no stranger to the process of transcreation. She takes real pleasure in deconstructing English-speaking content and adjusting the tone for a DACH audience, which generally favours clarity and efficiency over quirky style. Another aspect of her day-to-day work that Nicole loves is the in-depth subject matter research involved and exercising her brain when faced with constraints such as character limitations – no mean feat for a wordy language like German!

Elena Zanatta

Our Italian medical linguist Elena Zanatta knows European Medicines Agency (EMA) templates like the back of her hand and is well acquainted with the terminology featured in study protocols and informed consent forms (ICFs). Much like Nicole, Elena takes great joy in conducting detailed research to support her technical translation efforts, which deepens her understanding of specific medical conditions and builds out her subject matter expertise overall.

Julia Landry

Our state-qualified German translator Julia goes wild for all things fashion, but also has a soft spot for food-related copy (packaging and adverts for teas, chocolates, biscuits, drinks, etc.), tourism information, and content for social media platforms. Something Julia particularly loves about translation is the constant opportunities to learn new things: When you’re a translator, every day is a school day.

Eve Stenger

Hailing from France, marketing translation extraordinaire Eve focuses on areas that fascinate her, including tourism, sports and humanitarian work. She revels in the challenge presented by loud and bold English creative copy, which often requires careful rewording for the more reserved tastes of the French market. No two days are the same for Eve in her work as a translator – and that’s exactly how she likes it.

Alicia Pretot

Fellow French marketing expert Alicia loves the collaborative element of translation, liaising with project managers and brainstorming ideas with other linguists to track down the mot juste. Alicia gets involved on our editorial translations, meaning she can usually be found working on creative content such as art and photography books, poetry or museum brochures. She’s also a great port of call whenever a client wants to set up a style guide for their French-speaking communications.
