Rebellious Forests Wins Silver at the 2024 ICMA
We are absolutely delighted to announce that our English translation of the photography book Rebellious Forests has won Silver at the 2024 International Creative Media Award (ICMA).
Focused on custom media, books, corporate design and magazines, the ICMA competition first and foremost seeks to foster an exchange of creative ideas within an international sphere.
There is a string of categories involved – from graphic novels and guides to art books. Rebellious Forests rightly claimed its winning position in the category “Photo books photo reports”.
Spanning 248 pages, the book features an extensive collection of compelling black-and-white images taken by the photographer Pavel Hroch in Mexico’s Purépecha region. The accompanying commentary, originally written in Spanish by anthropologist and author León García Lam, examines questions such as deforestation, water shortages, and the violence of organised crime within the Purépecha community.
The decision to award Silver to Rebellious Forests was made after a nine-person jury met up in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. A whopping 407 entries hailing from 21 countries had been submitted overall, which truly speaks volumes about the quality of the winning titles.
We are extremely grateful to the heritage publisher Kulturalis for this successful collaboration and congratulate all of those involved on this amazing achievement.

The First Edition team’s contribution to Rebellious Forests involved adapting the Mexican Spanish text to the European Spanish market. Alongside this, we also translated the Spanish text into English. For this, we worked with our trusted editorial linguists in a three-step process – translation, revision and proofreading – to ensure a high-quality end result.
This was by no means our first book translation project. As our name suggests, editorial translations are very much in our wheelhouse. We are proud to have worked on a whole range of titles over the years – be that literary novels, children’s stories or museum brochures – since we first formed back in 1981.
