Capturing History in Every Language: First Edition Translations and the Royal Portraits exhibition

Jun 21, 2024

At First Edition Translations we have the rare privilege of working with a diverse range of clients.

Most recently, we were given the opportunity to work on an extraordinary project with the Royal Collection Trust, who have opened a new exhibition at the King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, that showcases royal portrait photography through the decades.

From the 1920s to the present day, this unique exhibition titled Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography guides visitors through the evolution of royal portrait photography with a rare collection of more than 150 prints, proofs and documents from the Royal Collection and Royal Archives.

First Edition Translations was asked to assist with translating and editing the wall texts covering not only the photographers featured in the collection, but also insightful information about the processes involved in planning, taking and developing royal portraits.

From original Word documents in English, our translation team created new documents in Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Spanish, and delivered the translated texts ready for layout ahead of the exhibition’s opening day on 17 May.

Royal Portraits: A Century of Photography showcases photographs from 40 photographers including Dorothy Wilding, Lord Snowdon, Annie Leibovitz and Cecil Beaton, as well as Andy Warhol, Jamie Reid and British fashion and documentary photographer Jamie Hawkesworth, who photographed then-Duchess of Cornwall Queen Camilla for Vogue to mark her 75th birthday.

First Edition Translations’ project manager for this project, Melanie Fitzgerald, said, “This has been another lovely project, and it’s always a pleasure working with Amy Sheehan, who is the Adult Learning Producer at Royal Collection Trust. I know all our translators and editors have really enjoyed working on this assignment, too. I cannot praise our team of experienced linguists enough – I knew I could rely on them to deliver to a deadline, which was slightly on the tight side. We are all looking forward to the next project!”
