What an exciting month September is proving to be, as we welcome yet another wonderful addition to the First Edition Translations team! Laura Germaney joins us as a project manager to help the team keep everything running like clockwork – and to kick things off we had a quick chat with her to find out more!
Laura, welcome to the First Edit team, we’re thrilled to have you join us! Could you give us some insight into your new role?
My role as project manager involves handling customer queries and overseeing projects from start to finish. In a nutshell, that means sending out quotes, processing files and getting them ready for translation, assigning work to our linguists, liaising on any queries, delivering the final results and, last but not least, processing invoices. At the heart of it, it’s about organising workloads.
The clients I specifically look after operate in a number of industries, but primarily in medicine and pharmaceuticals.
You’ve had an exciting path in translation-related roles, tell us more!
Before joining the lovely FE team, I worked as an in-house translator at a boutique agency specialised in German-English translations. I later moved into project management at another translation provider focused on creative marketing, so I feel like my time at First Edition is giving me yet another interesting angle on the world of localisation.
What led you to First Editions, and what are you looking forward to the most about this role?
Something that intrigued me about First Edition was the personal touch. For example, staff members are mentioned by name on our website – that’s always great to see. You’re essentially giving personal recognition to the people who help ensure the company runs smoothly. So we’re big enough to handle a lot of languages and different requirements, but we’re also small enough to have personal connections with each other, our clients and our trusty linguists. It’s beneficial for everyone involved.
What I’m most looking forward to within my role is cementing great relationships with our customers and collaborators. We have an amazing team of linguists who deliver great results and I’m excited to continue working with them.
Of your many talents, one that really stands out is how truly multi-lingual you are – tell us more about the languages you speak?
I’m a native English speaker, but I speak German and French, alongside a smattering of Dutch and Spanish. German is my main foreign language – I completed my master’s degree in Cologne and still go back there regularly. I started to really focus on German as my favourite foreign tongue during the last year of my undergraduate degree because I felt very welcomed during my previous exchange semester. Germany is a melting pot of cultures and lifestyles, and that’s what I love about it.
And tell us more about what you like to do outside of work?
I’m someone who likes to keep both my mind and body active, so I do quite a lot in my spare time. I’m based in Edinburgh, which offers a wealth of options to keep me entertained! I do trapeze and contortion classes, yoga and pilates, go hiking in the nearby greenery – which is in abundance in Scotland! – and attend French language classes.
Tell us about an experience you’ve had that really stands out…
An anecdotal trip that might be of interest is when I travelled solo to the Norwegian Fjords a few years back. I travelled by train through the snow-capped Norwegian mountains to a postcard-perfect village called Flåm. Besides taking to the water to see the marine wildlife, I ventured to a tiny dairy goat farm high-up in the middle of nowhere to hear about the goat herding culture in Norway and try some local delicacies. That was an experience I’ll never forget and, in hindsight, solo travelling like this has played a part in forging who I am today.
