Translation musings: Thirty five years in business

First Edition OfficeSeptember 2016 is an important milestone in the history of First Edition since it marks the 35th anniversary of the founding of the company: 35 years of delivering high quality translations and language solutions.

Established in 1981 as a company providing translation and editorial services, First Edition’s aim from the outset was to offer something more than the average translation agency: professional bespoke services and a very personal and agreeable experience. A measure of our success has been that UK and overseas clients who were with us from the very early days, still remain loyal to First Edition in 2016.

Language services are all about communication and this starts with good communication with clients. We pride ourselves on being easy to contact, accessible, willing to listen and ready to adapt to our clients’ requirements. There are no ‘one-size-fits-all’ packages on offer at First Edition. Our team of project coordinators are well trained and professional. Working closely with carefully selected qualified translators, they form a strong team and over the years we have forged close and enduring relationships with many of our freelance translators. Being in business for 35 years has thrown up a few challenges but ultimately our loyal customer base and ‘can do’ attitude have proved a winning combination. This, along with a willingness to embrace new technologies as they have developed, has made us confident that we maintain the highest standards.

Among the numerous projects we’ve handled over the years, there have been many highlights and the odd amusing situation. On one occasion, a client needed help with some new Japanese software on their laptop. They had inadvertently selected ‘Japanese language’ at the outset of installation and were at a loss to proceed or extricate themselves from the installation as all instructions were in Japanese. Fortunately, the Japanese speaker we sent over was able to sort out the problem.

As General Manager, I look back on 19 years of experiences: complex and complicated projects; embracing new software and programmes; developing the company databases and websites; marketing campaigns; client visits and business fairs; financial deadlines. Two things stand out in my mind: the shared experience of working with interesting clients on challenging projects, backed up by a superb team of staff and translators; and the pride in successfully completing a piece of work, large or small, to the client’s satisfaction.

Having taken a moment to consider the past history of the company, we also look forward to the future in celebrating a new chapter in the life of the company as part of the Cintra Language Services Group. In the years to come, First Edition will continue to offer the same excellent service that it always has done but now, in addition, can call upon the further expertise of the group in the field of translation and interpreting.

We look forward to a bright future, thank you for your past support and loyalty, and we hope that you will continue with us on our journey.
