Translation musings: check and check again

Jan 16, 2014 | Translation

Checking the fine printOne of our wonderful translators today picked me up on a very silly mistake I had made in an older blog post (no, I’m not telling you which one. And it’s fixed now anyway – the wonders of digital marketing!). All very embarrassing but a good reminder.

I have been writing marketing and other content for many (many!) years now. And one rule that is set in stone is never proofread your own work. You see what you want to see and miss the mistakes. Which is what I did, of course! Now, it is not always possible to get someone else to proofread your every output, but sometimes it just has to be done.

We’ve all seen the glaring errors made in translations – like the traffic sign with its Welsh translation reading “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated.” Guess what, it wasn’t checked! Wherever possible, but especially when your translation is to be published, it is well worth taking this extra precaution.

As well as translation and interpreting, using only professionals translating into their mother-tongue, we also offer checking, proofreading and editing to make sure that your well-intentioned communication gets the right message across and elicits the right response.
