The last chocolate in the box…

Dec 21, 2012 | Language

You know the situation, it’s happened to everyone. There’s one last solitary sweet in the box, biscuit in the barrel, cake on the plate. Everyone wants it but are just too polite to take it, sometimes to the point where it ends up getting thrown away! Wouldn’t it be great to have a word for that last lonely item?

Well, the Germans do and it’s a stunner!

Anstandsstückchen
literally meaning modesty piece (left behind through politeness!)

Remember this word when that last tragic little mince pie is looking up at you… And just eat it! (It just happened in the office but Anikó stood up admirably and took the last biscuit for the team – no more Anstandsstückchen here.)
