Mind your language

Sep 7, 2012 | Language

My family and I enjoyed a marvellous day at the Paralympics yesterday. The whole thing was a joy, from the travel (believe it or not!) to the Games Makers at the venue and, of course, the incredible displays of athletic excellence.

But the Paralympics has brought forth a whole new language dilemma – what are and are not acceptable words to describe the athletes? It goes beyond what is ‘politically correct’ and is really all about respect. The athletes are just that – athletes at the peaks of their careers and a privilege to watch.

But it does once again prove how important language is – whether it’s a ‘foreign’ language or the appropriateness of our own – don’t leave language to chance.

Check out this great article from The Guardian for more about this subject.
