Can Poirot and Miss Marple help teach English?

Mar 21, 2012 | Language, Translation

According to publishers Harper-Collins, yes! Twenty of Agatha Christie’s most famous novels are being simplified to help teach the language to non-native English speakers. There will also be notes to help the students with the historical and cultural context.

As recently reported in The Telegraph, Catherine Whitaker, of Harper Collins, doesn’t think there will be a problem with the murderous content.

“They’re quite genteel and they don’t go into gory details,” she said. “She has a huge international following, partly through TV adaptations.”

Although care has been taken to keep the feel of the original texts, the language has been brought bang up to date for use in the 21st century.

What a great way to learn!
